Domestic
Violence Programs:
The Community Service Agency's Special Program Division is currently responsible for
the funding, monitoring, and administering contracts of four domestic violence shelters in
the Orange County area. The Domestic Violence General Fund is derived from marriage
license fees and domestic violence batterer's fines. The shelters apply
for funding through a "Request for Proposal" process which is done every three
years. The current contracts will run from July 1, 1998 through June 30, 2001. Shelters
must be in operations for a full 2 years before applying for these funds. The four
shelters under the current contract are Human Options, Interval House, Laura's House, and
Women's Transitional Living Center. |
The shelters provide temporary "safe haven" for the victims of domestic violence
and their children. Each resident is provided with food, counseling, legal assistance,
educational opportunities, resource referrals, childcare,
and classes on consumer education, child rearing, and empowerment. The residents learn to
plan and execute personal goals that will benefit their future needs and objectives.
Maximum stay at each shelter is 45 days but those assessed as needing long term residence
may be transferred to a "Second Step" Resident Phase. This phase provides a
longer resident period in which a client/victim may continue her education or work
assignments in a safe and independent environment.
